Dr Martha Misheff (USA), FEI Course Director based at the Sharjah Equine Hospital, UAE, ran a very informative FEI Advanced Endurance Officials and Treating Veterinarians Course at Rossdales over the weekend of 7-8 October. It was attended by 12 veterinarians representing Belgium, Hungary, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland and the UK, including Rossdales partner Fred Barrelet.
The FEI's Veterinary Rules and Regulations in the context of its Endurance rules were reviewed. Interesting discussions developed concerning the assessment of fitness to compete based on video footage of horses trotted up in vet gates. The group benefited from Dr Misheff's vast experience as a leading Endurance treating veterinarian in a review of the of management of horses requiring veterinary care at Endurance events. Ongoing welfare concerns in this, other equestrian disciplines and initiatives to monitor and reduce injury rates were explored.
The delegates enjoyed an excellent course dinner at the historic Jockey Club Rooms in Newmarket. Many thanks for the fantastic support from Rona Newton, British Equestrian Federation, who organised and coordinated the course.
